I had to practice it to be able to pronounce it correct. And still I hardly can speak this tongue-twister. Anyway, canonicalization is the process through which a search engine decides which URL to select and keep in its index. As Matt Cutts has explained it, if there are several URLs, all pointing to the same resource, canonicalization process decides which one of these URLs is best. For example, all of the following URLs may point to the same resource:.
How does Google decides which URL to pick? Only Google knows! But one thing is certain, Google does give a lot of importance to the most consistent format.
That is why consistency in URL format is important. Two important tools can help you in achieving the said consistency. One is, of course, Google Webmasters Tools. Here you can select preferred domain for your website. This superb plugin allows you to setup a preferred domain name and then output all the URLs only in that chosen format. If you have been using non-www format and now want to change it to the www one; you should setup a redirect so that your links remain valid.
Do not panic! Either of the format is equally good. Even Twitter uses the non-www format naked domain. So not worry and just focus on producing good stuff for your website or blog.
I hope it was useful information for you. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions. Thank you for using TechWelkin. I have a domain indexed as non-www and added the same domain in Webmasters Tools including www followed by the domain. Is including www at Webmasters Tools a problem?
Please give me suggestion to overcome it…. In Webmasters Tools you need to added both non-www and www versions of your domain name. Then you set one of these as your preferred domain. If you still do not get any search data, then the problem is elsewhere.
Recently I installed WordPress blog in my hosting cpanel and I use non-www as preferred domain; like your website that uses non www. It seem to be easier for people to write and remember our website with non www URL. For full technical explanation and details, refer to this article on Why use www?

Thanks for this great article. Also: Help! Have I just screwed up my SEO completely? Do I really need to use redirects? Thanks so much. Best, Frances. In each test my site received a better rating if I entered with www. Does the www actually impact speed or is it just a fluke? It would depend on the specific warnings or messages but most likely, your hosting provider is redirecting one of the URLs to the other causing the slowdown which would mean it is nothing to worry about.
What if I have both non-www and www version on my site? But, then I need also non-www version to verify with GA. What about the penalty from Google for having same domain and subdomain? Google Analytics accepts www versions of sites, you would want to also ensure you set your preferred domain with Google.
I am Satisfied with this Article. Thanks for This type of Informative article. This article Answered my question. Glad you liked our article.
I changed mine just now to www from non www, will this damage my prexisting SEO? I already have both added to Webmasters and just changed my preference. When I enter URL directly of my website after clearing cache then store id is displayed along the url is it good for seo or not. Here is the url: example. WordPress users exist because you guys exist on internet, otherwise many people got distracted and ruined their business.
This would be important if the domain was used before buying it so its important to check any existing backlinks as there may be a benefit to www or non www depending which has the best metrics. Hello, thanks for this great article I have successfully verified my side with www but to set www based version as my preferred one, I have to also verify the non-www version which fails after I add the tag and use other means of property verification but to no avail please help how I can achieve that… My site is.
Hello, After setting my preferred domain to www version , my non www version is showing me robots. But due to fetch error i cant see any indexing on non www version so what should i do with robots. Thank you. If its that how can I resolve it?
Please give me some suggestions to overcome it. I have always wondered if not including the www in my url hurt SEO. Thanks for the article. Answered my question. Hi guys, I have a site configured as non-www but the www results are better than the non-www ones.
Should I switch to www? If you are saying that the same website is indexed with both www and non-www URLs on the same domain name, then this is actually causing the duplicate content issue for Google. You would need to pick one and stick to it.
You will also need to redirect users and search engines from the URL format that you drop. As we have mentioned above, the www is technically a subdomain itself. Some web hosts configure their servers in a way that automatically redirects users to non-www url when someone tries to access it with www.
Here is how you can fix it. Connect to your website using FTP. Go to your the folder containing your WordPress files. Webmasters Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for pro webmasters. It only takes a minute to sign up. Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. I'm trying to use Google Webmaster Tools correctly: I don't use the www in my website's URL, but just noticed that I must have entered the www when I originally added my site to Webmaster Tools a few months ago, because they have most of my site indexed with the www included.
I guess what I'm trying to ask is if I should create another website profile without the www included in the URL. Is Google viewing both versions as two different websites? Am I hurting myself by not using the www? How do they handle adding the verification file when both versions are really the same site? The verification file will be in the same spot on the server for either version. If I was to use the same verification file when creating a new profile for the non www version, what would happen?
Also what is weird is that I have a sitemap created for my site, but Webmaster Tools says that there isn't one available. First you should address how search engines crawl your site and avoid duplicate content issues by making sure you have the www subdomain www.
The most efficient way to do this is to create a DNS record - see the first example here on how. You should also use your web server's configuration to redirect the www subdomain to the root domain. Note that it may take some time for pages to reflect the preferred domain update.
I guess what I'm trying to ask is if I should create another website profile without the "www" included in the url. No, Google views the www subdomain as part of the same site as the root domain. See this for more on that. Once you have the www subdomain redirecting to the root domain, you likely will not have to verify the root domain, as stated here :. Generally, once you have verified one version of the domain, we can easily verify the other using the original verification method.
However, if you've removed the file, meta tag, or DNS record, you'll need to repeat the verification steps. Also what is weird is that I have a sitemap created for my site, but webmaster tools says that there isn't one available. Once you have the above redirection and preferred domain set up, submit your sitemap using Google Webmaster tools as covered here. You should register your site twice in Google Webmaster Tools. Once without the www and once with it.
